You complete an
Essay with One Page For and One Page against a Current Event Issue (usually
based on a list Jim provides).
Jim
sends out emails with questions/topics you can use.
You
email Jim back with which questions/topics you want to do.
Jim
approves (or rejects) your questions/topics. Be sure to write essays only on what Jim confirms is your assignment.
Make
sure your essay will be useful for at least 3 months–it should not be “This bill
will/will not pass” when the bill goes up for a vote in a week.
Doing
your NewsViews in the summer? Then, it must be useful
for at least 7 months—think about LONG term issues.
For each essay:
Title
the Essay “X is good” with the opposing essay being titled “X is bad” OR IT
COULD BE “Y will cause Z” with the opposing essay being “Y will not cause Z”
etc.
The
first paragraph of the essay
–introduces the topic
–shows the topic is
important/significant
–last sentence is a BOLDED thesis e.g. “This essay argues
that ____.”
The
next three paragraphs are simply three, different, and well developed reasons
that the thesis of the article is true.
–Each paragraph starts with a
sentence that clearly (and often explicitly) provides a reason for the thesis.
–Use short (1 liner) quotations from
key people on the topic
You must have at
least 8 different sources in your footnotes for each page.
You
must use complete Source Citations each time – NO Ibid.
