The Chico State Forensic Program is committed to advancing the benefits of speech and debate on a local, state, and national level. This is, first and foremost, an educational activity with emphasis on critical thinking, written and oral communication. On a local level, coaches and competitors will serve the campus by offering a Rookie Tournament each semester in order to give a maximum number of CSU students the opportunity to compete. In the greater Chico community, the team will host a debate and sponsor a workshop, which will benefit K-12 students and/or teachers. Regionally, the CSUC forensic team will establish and continue an active commitment to both the expansion and revitalization of speech and debate in the Northern California Forensics Association. Nationally, the team will make every effort to send competitors to key tournaments across the country, establishing CSUC as a nationally respected forensic program. The out-of-region tournaments will be selected each year in order to maximize student exposure to the top competitors, universities, and coaches in the country.

The Stanford Debate Society presently travels to parliamentary tournaments on both the east and west coast. In past years the Stanford Debate Team has traveled to all of the major NDT tournaments. If there is student interest in policy debate, it is likely the student-board will vote to renew sufficient funding for a top-level NDT/CEDA program. These negotiations are already taking place.

The Claremont Consortium offers a unique model for American higher education. Officially born on October 14, 1925, the cluster of independent and cooperative colleges, generally based on the design of Oxford University, is an alliance that is now widely recognized as one of the nation’s greatest centers of liberal arts education. Seven educational institutions now constitute The Claremont Colleges: Pomona College, founded in 1887; Claremont Graduate University, 1925; Scripps College, 1926: Claremont McKenna College, 1946; Harvey Mudd College, 1955; Pitzer College, 1963; and the Keck Graduate Institute for Applied Life Sciences, 1997. Student enrollment for the consortium is more than 5400 full-time students. Each year, students take roughly 6000 courses at a campus other than their home campus-about 16 percent of the total courses offered. This cross-registration is one of the Consortium’s most remarkable qualities. Students literally get seven colleges for the price of one and an array of course offerings found only in the most select universities. The Claremont Colleges are now nationally and internationally renowned for excellence. Several of the Colleges are consistently rated among the very best in the nation. This has helped draw students from across the country and around the world.

travel to national competitions in policy and parliamentary debate and additional international events in
parliamentary debate. More than thirty-five
debate teams won awards in national or international competition in
2000-2001; CCDU students placed in the final round of more than fifty debate
tournaments in the past
three years, winning thirty-three tournament championships in the US and abroad. Students won more than one hundred and fifty team and individual debate awards in 2000-2001. The CCDU also participated in more than one hundred non-competitive public events during the academic year, including the production of forty public affairs television programs.
There are no debate scholarships at the Claremont Colleges. The colleges offer significant financial assistance on a need basis. In addition, there are non-need based academic scholarships at the member colleges of the consortium.

Pace University is a diverse institution with nearly 14,000 students. For 92 years, bright, motivated and talented men and women have walked out of Pace’s many doors, degrees in hand and have ventured into the world prepared for the challenges of each passing decade. Every year curriculum offerings in the schools and colleges are modified to meet the changing needs of ambitious and knowledgeable students. Pace University draws its strength from being a unified institution that offers students a choice of three locations, each with its own distinctive atmosphere, ranging from the quintessential urban (New York City) to small city (White Plains) to suburban/ rural (Pleasantville/Briarcliff). The New York City campus, located in the heart of the civic and financial center of the city, is impressive not only in its physical attributes, but as an intellectual and cultural focal point for one of New York City’s most dynamic and revitalized areas. The Franklin Debating Society members participate in
both debate and speech activities. Debaters
debate on-campus as well as at parliamentary and L-D tournaments. Speakers participate in several tournaments per year. There is some crossover from the one group to the other. The Society tries to keep alive some of the traditions dating from its 1876 founding, including a large measure of student direction. Thus, what the Society does from year-to-year depends a great deal on the participating students’ decisions.
None per se. However, R-MC does award scholarships based on high school achievements, speech and debate achievements among the ones considered.

The University of Maryland Baltimore County was the first public institution on the American Parliamentary Debate Association. Throughout our fifteen year history, we have had top finishes at the World Universities Debating Championships, many invitational tournaments, and the APDA National Championships. In fact, we had the third place team at Nationals 2000, and the top speaker at Nationals 2001. In 2002, we are actually hosting the APDA National Championships. Finally, UMBC has made a name for itself with not only its success, but with its unique style of debate - running “fun” cases - seemingly silly topics that serve as a framework for serious analysis, making many rounds both memorable and amusing.

The following is the purpose of our team as stated in our Constitution. The purpose of the Team shall be to provide an extra-curricular coed organization at the University for undergraduate members of the University Community who desire to improve their oratorical skills; to engage in such activities as will bring increased prestige and recognition to the Team and the University; and to encourage a spirit of cooperation and achievement among its members. The University of Pennsylvania Speech and Debate team is a smaller program that works to develop individual communication skills. We are completely student-run and funded by the Annenberg School for Communication. The team has been growing for the past seven years, and in that brief period of time, we’ve had a lot of talented speakers as members of this team including numerous national finalists and champions. We look to continue the growth and success of our program, and to further develop the talent on our team. The Penn Speech and Debate team, through the oversight of the Debate Council, sponsors a high school tournament in late January called the Liberty Bell Classic. Events that are offered at this tournament are Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Duo Interpretation, Oratorical Declamation, Lincoln-Douglas debate, and Student Congress. Last year, competitors from seven states and 55 schools traveled to the Penn campus for competition. In addition, there were more than 120 Lincoln-Douglas entries and over 500 individual event entries the 1998 Liberty Bell Classic. The Liberty Bell Classic is one of the largest tournaments on the East Coast, and the team puts a lot of effort to run it efficiently.

Policy Debate
The William Pitt Debating Union is a student organization involved in a wide range of debating activities, including two-person intercollegiate policy debate, international parliamentary debate, and various forms of public debate. One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation, the Union is directly affiliated with the Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh. The bedrock philosophy of the William Pitt Debating Union is that argument can educate as well as emancipate. By providing for students a forum to sharpen their critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of contemporary political issues, and hone their abilities as actors in the public realm, the Union actualizes its educational mission. By spurring robust, inclusive debate and discussion in the public community, the Union performs its politically emancipatory function, serving as a catalyst for reasoned public dialogue on key issues facing society. Much of the Union’s energy in pursuing these tasks comes from a team culture which places a premium on group solidarity and cooperation. Such cooperation is vital to cultivation of a pedagogically rich learning environment, competitive success in intercollegiate contests, and to political mobilization in defense of open public argument. In their activities, members of the Union are expected not only to contribute in a dynamic and cooperative way to these goals, but to consistently meet the highest standards of integrity in research, teamwork and advocacy.

We have consistently ranked in the top 20 and in 2000-2001, we ranked 4th overall in the CEDA sweepstakes. We foster every level of debate, and especially love having NOVICE debaters get full exposure to the activity since we feel debate is an activity to allow those whose voices were silenced to be able to be heard, not just those that felt that way in high school.
