Cal Poly
Debate is an integral component in the university's "Learn by Doing"
approach to higher education. There are three primary components to the Cal
Poly Debate Program: The Intramural
Competition component sponsors quarterly on-campus competition in debate and
public speaking. The Community
Service program matches student judges with campus and community speaking
contests needing trained debate and public speaking judging. The Cal Poly Debate Team is the flagship
component of the program. Cal Poly Debaters conduct in-depth research on
questions of major contemporary importance, participate in strategy sessions
with instructors and other students, and engage in intense oral debates with
students from other universities. Tournament competition is the capstone
experience for Cal Poly Debate.

Our program is
one of two full-time NDT/CEDA policy debate programs in the entire state of
Pennsylvania. Clarion has been very
successful in recent years working with novice, junior varsity, and varsity
level debaters as we have qualified for the NDT, won the ADA National
Championship in JV, and been a finalist at ADA Nats in novice in the past three
years. Furthermore, we offer our
students a host of on-campus speech and debate opportunities to supplement the
intercollegiate avenue. Our goal is not
to simply make you a successful debater in terms of wins and losses, but to
make you a better educated and responsible person as a result of your
participation in the activity. If you
have any questions, please email Jim Lyle (jlyle@clarion.edu)

Concordia
Forensics is directed toward helping undergraduate students learn to make
reasoned decisions that pursue their own goals.
In pursuit of that goal, we strive to both provide wide access to the
program and to allow motivated students the ability to compete and succeed in
national level competition.
1. There are
dedicated forensics program scholarships controlled by our Office of
Enrollment. Last year they offered 10
awards of $2,500 annually-renewable for four years. 2.

The Cornell
Forensics Society is a student organization offering intercollegiate speech and
debate competition. For individual speech events, we participate in the AFA,
NFA, and DSR-TKA sanctioned tournaments. The two-person policy debate squad
travels to CEDA, NDT, and ADA sanctioned tournaments. Cornell's policy debate program is one of the
largest and most diverse programs in the U.S., with dozens of participants
equally divided over all three levels of competition: novice, junior varsity,
and varsity. Last year the team
ranked 13th in the country in CEDA points, and this year it is aiming for the
top ten. Understanding that Cornell is
an academically rigorous Ivy League school, tournaments are always optional and
we always stress school first. One of
the benefits of debating in our region is that tournaments take place on
Saturday and Sunday, so participants can go to tournaments and not miss any
classes. All levels of experience are
welcome, and we have a coaching staff that strongly encourages people who have
never debated before as well as coaches who prepare students for national
competitions. In addition to policy
debate, the Cornell Forensics Society also competes in parliamentary debate,
with students traveling annually to Slovenia to participate in an international
debate academy. Finally, the Cornell
Forensic Society offers speech and individual events competition. There are three categories of individual
events: Platform speeches, Limited Preparation, and Dramatic Interpretation,
and different events within those categories.
The Cornell Forensics Society encourages students to try out any of the
events we offer and find the one they really enjoy.
As a
co-curricular activity, Forensics participation can be rewarded with course
credit.

Dartmouth
College offers a special combination of excellence in both academics and
debate. The school is always ranked among the best colleges in the nation. It
also has a long history of success in policy debate, including 6 NDT champions.
At least one of Dartmouth's teams (and usually the maximum of two) have
received a first round at-large invitation to the NDT in every year since 1978. The program is open to anyone with any
experience in high school policy debate.
Debaters entering the program vary widely in the extent of their high
school experience, but the differences quickly diminish as the less experienced
debaters gain from their participation in our program. Dartmouth has one of the larger college
policy debate programs with usually 10 - 12 teams competing each year. The College is very supportive of debate and
provides maximum opportunity for all of the teams, including a number of
full-time coaches and a large travel budget.
All teams, including first-years, travel a tournament schedule that will
challenge them. Tournaments are selected
so that teams will have to debate their best to clear to elims; for most
Dartmouth teams (again, including first-years) that means traveling the
national circuit. The programs covers
all expenses involved in debating: airfare, vans, hotels, entry fees, meals,
supplies, printing, photocopying, etc. The debate offices are conveniently
located, large, and fully equipped for the debaters to work in. Despite the academic demands of an Ivy
League institution, with good time management debaters can do very well in both
their classes and debate, and still have time for other things. Classes always
come first, before research assignments and tournament travel. Our debaters
regularly do exceptionally well in classes and go on to attend the nation's top
law and graduate programs. The
Dartmouth squad tends to be social, friendly, and supportive of all its members. In the Debaters Choice Awards, when college
debaters across the nation are asked what squad, other than their own, they
would most want to be part of, Dartmouth's is usually at the top.
Like all the
Ivy League schools, Dartmouth does not offer any merit-based scholarships -- no
athletic, academic, debate or other assistance not based on need. The College does, however, tend to be very
generous in its need-based assistance.
Admission to Dartmouth is need-blind, and the College is committed to
making it financially possible for all who are admitted to be able to
attend. Most financial aid packages
include work on campus. We hire all
eligible debaters to do debate work, photocopying evidence, etc. While this does not provide additional money,
it is more convenient that working in the library, food service, etc. Most debaters do work in our summer high
school programs, one for 3 weeks and another for 4. The pay and the hours are far better than
most of the summer jobs college students are able to find.

The Barkley
Forum is among the most successful intercollegiate debate teams in the nation.
By any measure, participation rates, competitive success, community service,
and academic achievement, the members of the Barkley Forum help to make Emory
debate an overwhelming success story. At any one time, between forty and sixty
Emory University students participate in Forum activities either as competitive
debaters, public debaters, interns and judges, or assisting with major Forum
sponsored events. Over forty students will represent Emory University at
various intercollegiate debate tournaments throughout the academic year.
The Barkley
Forum, in conjunction with the Emory Admissions Office, awards a merit
scholarship to an incoming first year student every year. Applicants must
demonstrate academic achievement and debate excellence to be eligible for
consideration. Applicants must submit their application directly to the Barkley
Forum for review by the Director of the Barkley Forum and the Director of
Admissions at Emory University. The form includes current cumulative G.P.A.,
test scores, and a record of debate accomplishments.

The modern
debate team at GSU competes in a variety of tournaments, both regional and
national. We participate in NDT, CEDA, and ADA-sponsored events. Students are paired
into two-person teams through a combination of their own input and guidance
from the coaching staff. How often (and to which tournaments) a student travels
will be determined by a combination of factors including experience, academic
status, and the student’s own interest in competing. We are committed not only
to supporting, but to celebrating all kinds of diversity on our team. The goal
of the coaching staff is to provide an environment where everyone feels
comfortable and enthusiastic. The debaters
themselves have developed most of the practices we follow. Those who are
interested in higher level competition usually choose to take on a greater
research load, but everything produced by anyone on the team is shared by all
debaters. We do not have “card quotas,” but we do expect those who volunteer
for assignments to live up to their responsibilities. Coaches frequently help
debaters with arguments, but debaters almost always make their own decisions
about what to research and which arguments to run. We support traditional
policy argumentation as well as critiques and even more radical attempts to
change the basic framework of debate.
GSU hosts two nationally prominent college tournaments every year. In
September, we host the GSU National College Debate Tournament, which has become
one of the four most significant regular season competitions in college debate.
In February, we host the Southeast and Southeast Central CEDA Regional
Championship, which also serves as a qualifier for the National Debate
Tournament.How Competition Works Our
goal is to maximize the number of quality competitive experiences for every
student on the team, and to make sure that students travel to the kinds of
tournaments that are appropriate for them. Georgia State pays for most aspects
of a debater’s travel, including: transportation, lodging, meal money, and
supplies. The coaching staff serves as a liaison between students and faculty,
but students are expected to be proactive in their academic lives. OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES We believe in serving Georgia State
students. For us, this means that we travel everyone who wants to participate
and who commits to representing the school with integrity. It also means that
we think debate should enhance, not preclude, academic and interpersonal
success. We believe in serving the
Atlanta community. We are committed to furthering urban and rural debate
through both academic and volunteer work. We believe college debate should
foster and support high school debate. Debaters are encouraged to explore
avenues for positive activism. We
believe in mutual respect between and among debaters and coaches. We believe
that debaters are motivated by their own desire to succeed. Coaches do not yell
at or disrespect debaters, and debaters respect coaches’ perspectives and
experience. We never, under any circumstances, accept intolerance or rude
behavior. We believe that debate
should be enjoyable, as well as educational. The team should function like a
healthy family, and the practice of debate should bring satisfaction to those
who are involved in it. We work to make debate practice, research, and
competition a positive experience for everyone.
GSU is a
“Hope” school, which means that if you are a Georgia resident and have a 3.0 or
above, you can attend free of charge. Additionally, the debate team has a
number of out-of-state tuition waivers it can use to reduce the cost of tuition
for those who are not Georgia residents. GSU also provides generous traditional
financial aid, including academic scholarship. The debate team offers scholarship funds to
experienced high school debaters on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Dr.
Bellon directly if you are interested. We also have a number of work-study
opportunities with the debate team for those who qualify for federal work-study
support.

While the
James M. Rupp Debate Society is relatively young, we have already built a tradition
of excellence in NDT/CEDA debate. We excel at both regional and national
tournaments. Team goals include
competitive success and providing a quality education for the debaters on the
squad. Debaters are expected to perform well in their classes and to make
progress toward graduation.
Argumentatively, the team does not dictate what type of argument
debaters are allowed to run. We have both critical and policy oriented teams. Despite our diverse interests in arguments,
teams members are expected to work together to support the competitive success
of the squad.
James M. and
Sharon E. Rupp have funded a generous endowment including scholarships for
Idaho State Debate. Rupp Debate Society scholarships will be awarded to
incoming and returning students who have demonstrated academic debate
success. Scholarships range from $100
to $2100 a semester. They are awarded based on competitive success, work ethic,
talent and participation. Scholarships are renewed each semester. For out of state students, there is a good
possibility of obtaining out of state tuition waivers to cover the remainder of
the cost. A minimum 2.75 GPA is required for consideration for a scholarship. To apply send a letter of application, a

The Liberty
Debate Team began in 1980 at Liberty University, then Liberty Baptist
College. The goals of Liberty Debate are
to compete at the highest levels of intercollegiate debate while also
maintaining an active Christian witness. Liberty competes in policy debate as a
member of the National Debate Tournament, the American Debate Association, and
the Cross Examination Debate Association.
Since 1980, Liberty Debate has experienced rapidly expanding
success. Liberty Debate finished in the
top twenty in the National Debate Tournament rankings in 1989 and qualified for
the National Debate Tournament for the first time in that same year. Since that time, Liberty has consistently
finished in the top five in the NDT and the American Debate Association
rankings. In 1995 and 1996, Liberty won
two national championships in debate by finishing first in both the NDT and ADA
rankings. Liberty has won eighteen
national rankings championships in college debate and is the only school to
have won a rankings championship in all three policy debate orgainzations. Liberty has also consistently qualified for
the National Debate Tournament since 1989 and has advanced to the elimination
rounds of the National Tournament each year since 1995. Liberty has competed with success at all
levels of debate boasting tournament victories in each of the divisions of
debate and creating tradition along the way.
In 1997 a Liberty Varsity Team won the ADA National Championship
tournament, and a Liberty Junior Varsity team won the Junior Varsity National
Championship. The Liberty Novice teams
have won the Wake Forest University Novice Tournament in all but one year of
its existence. In 1996, Liberty hosted
the American Debate Association National Tournament and, in 1997, Liberty
hosted the National Debate Tournament.
Scholarships
are available for debating at Liberty and are based on prior debate experience
and on potential. Application should be
made directly to Liberty Debate.

Macalester
has one of the oldest, most stable, and successful forensics programs in the
nation. What makes our program
distinctive, whether we compare it to other small colleges or to major
universities, is its breadth. We do a
lot more than policy debate. We are also
home to a nationally-ranked mock trial team as well as the school's Model
United Nations program. We are the only
forensics prgram in the country to offer its students such a broad menu of
forensics competition.
Are
scholarships available at the school?
Macalester has many scholarships available. Three-fourths of the student body gets
financial aid from the College and the average award is in excess of 19,000
dollars. While we have many scholarships
for scholars, we have none for debaters.

Marist
College is located in Poughkeepsie NY on the banks of the Hudson River, roughly
90 minutes north of New York City. For a
list of our degree programs, please visit http://www.marist.edu. Marist Debate is an extracurricular
activity for undergraduates who wish to engage in discourse, argument and
critical thinking. Marist Debate is housed in the School of Communication and
the Arts. Marist Debate maintains a
tradition of public advocacy, civic responsibility and competitive success. The
Marist Debate team participates in three major areas: competitive debate,
public debate, and outreach. Our program is designed to provide students with
the skills needed to succeed professionally and serve communities in need. Marist competes nationally in NDT/CEDA
policy debate. Our program succeeds at
regional tournaments and remains competitive in national settings. Our debaters are routinely recognized among
the best speakers in the Northeast region.
Marist competes annually at CEDA Nationals and qualified for the 2006-2007
National Debate Tournament. We are eager
to continue building toward national competitive success. Our program is open to all who wish to
debate. While prior competitive success
in debate is desirable, no prior experience as a debater is necessary. Marist Debate places strong emphasis in
helping students new to debate acclimate and succeed. Students involved in high school speech,
model UN/Congress may find Marist Debate to be an inclusive and educational
opportunity to continue speaking activities during college. The Marist Debate program also includes a
three-credit elective Argument & Debate course. Students learn logical reasoning and critical
thinking skills and are given the opportunity to drive class discussion through
debate of current events. Participants
also complete a debate praxis project.
Strong emphasis is placed on developing analytical tools essential to
students' career goals.
Marist
Debate offers partial tuition scholarships to students who exemplify a
commitment to debate and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. Students with high school debate and/or Urban
Debate League experience are strongly urged to apply. Scholarships may also be supplemented with
financial assistance through the Office of Financial Aid. Students applying to Marist with prior high
school speech or debate experience should contact the Director of Debate for
more scholarship/aid information at 845-575-3000 x2075 or james.maritato@marist.edu.

year. MSU teams are consistently
competitive at the national level, and have won two of the last three National
Debate Tournaments.

Information: Missouri State participates exclusively in NDT/CEDA 2-person
policy debate. Our program is well funded for travel - we attend all national
circuit tournaments and nearly every tournament in our region. Not all students
attend all tournaments - 4-6 per semester is typical. We cover all travel
costs, including hotels, transportation, entry fees, and meal money. We take
pride in having a deep team, traveling more than the top couple of teams to
most major tournaments. We've had students representing 10 states on the team
in the last year or two. Since 2004, we've reached semifinals of both NDT and
CEDA, had the top speaker at both, cleared at almost every national circuit
tournament attended, received two 1st round at-large bids, cleared 5 teams at
the NDT, and are one of only 6 schools to qualify 4 teams to the Wake Forest
Tournament. The successes are more impressive given that none of those debaters
cleared at the Tournament of Champions
in high school (only two of them even qualified). We tend to recruit a few
select out of state debaters to create a better balanced team, and then try to
create an environment where debaters of various backgrounds and preferences can
thrive if they are willing to work. In addition to contacting coaches, please
visit our web page to locate contact information for debaters. They can share
their experiences of debating for our program.
The debate
team has several $2000 Regents Scholarships, some variable cash awards, and
several out of state waivers. The amount available each fall varies, based on
the number of departing debaters. Most Missouri State debaters combine debate
scholarships with our school's generous "entitlement" (automatic)
scholarships, which are described on this page
[http://www.missouristate.edu/FinancialAid/scholarships/freshmanscholarshipprograms.html].
The academic scholarships require application by March 1 (a couple are earlier),
and debaters are historically competitive for the non-entitlement programs
(Presidential, Multicultural Leadership). Missouri State's tuition is also
quite competitive (roughly $6000/year in-state, and every current debater has
some form of OOS waiver).

We are a
currently a squad of 20 debaters that competes in Policy Debate in the North East
Region. We travel to around 10-14
tournaments a year and hope to increase the number of tournaments in the
future. We encourage any undergraduate
student who attends any of The New School's Campuses to join the team. We are a very diverse group of individuals
who are very passionate about their arguments. In addition to traveling and
competing at other Universities we also host 3-4 public debates on campus each
semester, travel to a minimum security prison and debate the inmates debate
team, host a Round Robin Tournament in the Spring, and help with The Impact
Coalition (NYC Urban Debate League).
We don't
currently have a debate scholarship set up, but we are hoping to get some
established in the future. One of the
good things about The New School is that it is a private university and the
financial aid department does it's best to make sure that every student has
their financial needs meet. We do offer
a few debate work-study positions for students to assist in the adminstrative
side of debate and make some money at the same time.

Experience levels on the team vary and although we appreciate high

Pepperdine
offers a number of partial scholarships each year. Our amounts vary according to commitment
level. In addition, the financial aid
department at Pepperdine works hard to make sure that all admitted students
have the financial help they need.

Our program
believes that Forensics represents the best way to develop the human voice of

appropriate means for developing strength of character and a degree of
excellence necessary for the formation of civic leaders. We strive for the strongest development of

establishing our personal identities, and advocating for the well being others. With these goals in mind we submit to
rigorous processes of research, organization, presentation, and judgment in
order develop student abilities to speak well.
