The Baker Forensics Program is first and foremost an
educational opportunity for students of any major to develop essential
communication skills. Team membership
and tournament competition provide a fun and interesting way to work on these
important aspects of career and personal growth. It is our goal to provide the student with a
maximum of these exciting educational experiences, balancing them with a
cautious eye toward the excesses sometimes found in competitve forensics

Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska holds four regional tournaments
each year and crowns a regional champion in both a university and a junior
college division each year. In 1998-99 CSI won the junior college division and
placed higher than all but four of the universities, placing fifth

that debate teaches research methods, case construction, informs about proof
(logic and reasoning and evidence), helps students organize and improve their
language skills, helps with listening and notetaking, improves refutation and
rebuttal, and assists in presentational/communications skills. We think
individual events help student research, outline and organize, work on language

Macalester has one of the oldest, most stable, and successful
forensics programs in the nation. What
makes our program distinctive, whether er compare it to other small colleges or
to major universities, is its breadth.
We so a lot more than policy debate.
We are also home to a growing parliamentary debate squad and a
nationally-ranked mock trial team as well as the school's Model United Nations
program. We are the only forensics
prgram in the country to offer its students such a broad menu of forensics
competition.
Macalester has many scholarships available. Three-fourths of the student body gets
financial aid from the College and the average award is in excess of 16,000
dollars. While we have many scholarships
for scholars, we have none for debaters.

The Northeastern State Debate and Forensics Team competes as
a member of the Great Plains Forensic Conference (GPFC) and the American
Forensic Association (AFA). Tournament participation is integrated into the
students' overall academic experience and is generally limited to three or four
opportunities to compete each semester. Each semester brings a new debate
topic. In the fall semester, we debate a
resolution of value, in the spring, we argue a policy resolution. An emphasis
is placed on the communicative nature of public discourse within competition.
The Great Plains Forensic Conference, as well as the Northeastern State
University coaching philosophy mandate that speakers engage in polite, well
reasoned and articulate discourse. Delivery styles that violate these
guidelines are not tolerated. In an ongoing attempt to enforce these
guidelines, GPFC employ "lay judges" drawn from outside the debate
community for at least half of all debate rounds. The debate philosophy is that intercollegiate
competition should be a dress rehearsal for life. By encouraging argumentation
in an atmosphere of reasoned, civil discourse, we believe we prepare our team
members for the realities of society. In addition to competition in
intercollegiate debate, the Northeastern State squad competes in a variety of
individual speaking events. Among the events typically offered for competition
are impromptu speaking, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking,
persuasive speaking, after dinner speaking, oral interpretation of prose, oral
interpretation of poetry, oral interpretation of dramatic literature, and
dramatic duo.
There is virtually NO cost to be on the Northeastern State

NIU Forensics is devoted to providing opportunities for
students in three specific areas: (1) competitive intercollegiate debate, (2)
individual events, and (3) public debate.
At NIU Forensic activities are conducted within one student organization
that enjoys additional support from the Department of Communication. The department provides the resources for a
coaching staff of three faculty members and four graduate assistants. Therefore, NIU Forensics remains grounded in
the rich traditions of student power and advocacy and the combined knowledge of
highly-skilled experts in the field of argumentation and speech. Most importantly, absolutely no experience is
necessary to join our organization. For most who join the activity, a regular
schedule of regional tournaments provides continuous competition from which
students develop and eventually master their skills. This is the nature of forensics, continuous
exposure to competitive speaking settings, between which students improve and
revise their performance based on criticism and strategic planning. These tournaments involve travel to other
universities throughout the Midwest, and occasionally sites beyond our
region. Because NIU Forensics is an
interdisciplinary student organization, it receives funding from the NIU
Student Association that makes it possible to cover all cost associated with

The University of Oklahoma Speech and Debate program is
celebrating its 55th year of competition.
The dedication of the students and support from the university have
contributed to numerous national and state honors for both the team and
individual students. OU has won the
state championship every year but one year since 1993, the first year of the
state tournament’s existence, reclaiming it last year after its one year away
from OU. The team has finished in the
top twenty six of the last nine years at the American Forensics Association
National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET): 1997, 17th place; 1996, 10th
place; 1994, 5th place; 1993, 9th place; 1992, 18th place; and in 1991, 6th
place. Last year, the team also qualified
for and competed in the National Parliamentary Debate Associations National
Championship Tournament as well as for the AFA-NIET, for which it has qualified
every year since 1991.

The following is the purpose of our team as stated in our
Constitution. The purpose of the Team
shall be to provide an extra-curricular coed organization at the University for
undergraduate members of the University Community who desire to improve their
oratorical skills; to engage in such activities as will bring increased
prestige and recognition to the Team and the University; and to encourage a
spirit of cooperation and achievement among its members. The University of
Pennsylvania Speech and Debate team is a smaller program that works to develop
individual communication skills. We are
completely student-run and funded by the Annenberg School for
Communication. The team has been growing
for the past seven years, and in that brief period of time, we’ve had a lot of
talented speakers as members of this team including numerous national finalists
and champions. We look to continue the
growth and success of our program, and to further develop the talent on our
team. The Penn Speech and Debate team, through the oversight of the Debate
Council, sponsors a high school tournament in late January called the Liberty

this tournament are Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Dramatic
Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Duo Interpretation, Oratorical

55 schools traveled to the Penn campus for competition. In addition, there were more than 120
Lincoln-Douglas entries and over 500 individual event entries the 1998 Liberty

The Webster forensics program is intended to be multi-tiered,

general, we believe that forensics activities are intended as laboratory

educational outcomes are paramount, competitive success is also a goal of this
