Theory Evidence: What is good source for theory evidence?

In addition to the West Coast Theory handbook (check out this link Info on the WC Theory Handbook), I would suggest looking at the following:

  • Bennett, William J. Pragmatic Debate. (1989). Santa Fe, New Mexico: Championship Debate Enterprises.
Provides a variety of strategic approaches and activities for debating. Thoughtful insights born out of practice, not a theoretical tower.

Berube, David with Snider, A.C., and Pray, Kristina. Non-Policy Debating (1994). University Press of America, Inc., 4720 Boston Way, Lanham, Maryland 20706.
This thorough and very contemporary textbook takes on modern value debate practice. The book examines intrinsicness, counterfactuals, language critiques, criterial objections and more.

Freeley, Austin J. Argumentation and Debate: Critical Thinking for Reasoned Decision Making, 7th Edition. (1990). Wadsworth Publishing Co., Belmont, California 94402.
This book, in detail, covers virtually every aspect of debate. It is very clearly organized and includes excellent research and evidence sections.

Hanson, Jim. NTC’s Dictionary of Debate. (1990). National Textbook Company, 4255 West Touhy Avenue, Lincolnwood, Illinois 60646-1975.
Covering virtually every term used in debate, this dictionary also includes some argumentation terms. It clearly defines each term and offers examples and uses of the term. A real must to keep up with debate jargon.

Patterson, J.W., & Zarefsky, David. (1983). Contemporary Debate. Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Co.
This text describes debate from a hypothesis testing approach. In detail, it applies principles of logic to debate.

Thomas, David A., & Hart, Jack, editors. Advanced Debate: Readings in Theory and Practice. (1992). National Textbook Company, 4255 West Touhy Avenue, Lincolnwood, Illinois 60646-1975.
This text is simply fantastic. It includes articles on presumption, paradigms, case structures, value debate, computer use, topicality, and more. A superb review of the finest articles over the past two decades.

Wiese, Jeffrey. Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Values in Conflict, (1993). Clark Publishing, Inc., Box 4875, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
A fantastic resource with many invaluable tips on style, values, rebuttals and more, this is one of the finest books on Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Winkler, Carol, Newnam, William, and Birdsell, David. Lines of Argument (1993). Wm. C. Brown Communications, Inc., 2460 Kerper Boulevard, Dubuque, IA 52001.
A superb blend of argumentation and theory guide this excellent set of three texts. One text takes students through the basics of argumentation and debate theory. The other two texts separately cover value and policy debate.

    Organization Publications

Proceedings of the SCA/AFA Conference on Argumentation. Annandale: Speech Communication Association and the American Forensic Association.
This book, published every other year, provides many, many articles on both debate and argumentation theory and practice. A real must for those wanting to stay on the cutting edge of theoretical development.

Argumentation and Advocacy: Journal of the American Forensic Association.
This is an excellent resource of some of the finest articles on argumentation and debate theory.

Speaker and Gavel. (Publication of Delta Sigma Rho--Tau Kappa Alpha.)
Includes many excellent articles on individual events and debate practice and theory.

The Forensic. (Publication of Pi Kappa Delta.)
Includes thoughtful articles on individual events and debate practice and theory.

CEDA Yearbook. (Publication of the Cross-Examination Debate Association.)
Includes excellent articles on theory concerning CEDA, value debate and argumentation theory.
